Michael has been involved in work-based adult education, learning, and vocational education for over 30 years. His experience includes more than 18 years in leadership roles including leading a National ITAB, an Industry Skills Council and now a Skills Service Organisation, Skills Impact. He established Skills Impact as an industry owned not for profit with SSO, with support from industry.

Michael bases his leadership on a wide knowledge of workplace learning, education and training coupled with an innovative mindset which supports him to engage and add value with both industry and VET sector stakeholders. Michael holds a Diploma of Management (Community Services), Certificate IV in Workplace Training and Assessment, Corporate Governance Qualifications, Innovation for Leaders Skill Set and trade qualifications.

Skills Impact connects with thousands of industry and RTO stakeholder each year.  Industry stakeholders via Industry Reference Committees (IRCs) express various views about competency, the context it appears in and assessment.  This presentation will examine industry expectations and the challenges under current system and regulatory settings to achieve competency as defined in the VET system. Michael will be putting forward provocative propositions regarding competency and context to challenge the current paradigm and participants’ thinking.
